Noémie Lafrance

 

Noémie Lafrance is a choreographer, film director, and producer, known for her live performance work staging the public space, and her choreography on screen for the music and film industries.

She is sought after for her unique approach to camera work, and her expertise working with large groups of performers and extras. She choreographed the “Pan American Games Opening Ceremony” commissioned by Cirque du Soleil (2015), and the UEFA Champions League Final Opening Ceremony with Alicia Keys, in Milan (2016), David Byrne and Brian Eno’s World Tour (2008-2009), the Bollywood film “Basmati Blues” featuring Donald Sutherland, Tyne Daly and Brie Larson, directed by Dan Baron (2012-2015) among others.

Her music video choreography includes MTV award Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors," several Feist videos including Grammy nominated “1,2,3,4,” Rita Ora's "Your Song," Carly Rae Jepsen "I Really Like You," featuring Justin Bieber and Tom Hanks, Snow Patrol's "Called Out in the Dark"and "In The End." She has created choreography for brands such as Nike, Absolut Vodka, Coca-Cola, Harry Winston, Bacardi, Smirnoff, Apple, AT&T, Sprint, MTV, Nestea, Clarks, Bloomingdales.

Lafrance's work staged in public spaces includes Agora (2005), which reopened the McCarren Park pool site to the public after 20 years of abandonment. Her signature work Descent(2001-03) staged in a stairwell located in a city criminal court house in NYC was a recipient of a Bessie Award for choreography and score, and was named “best performance of the year” in Time-Out NY and the New York Times. Her piece Noir (2004) presented as part of the prestigious Whitney Museum Biennial was staged in a public parking garage in te Lower East Side and seated the audience in cars. Home (2009) used her own body as the site of the performance. Her large-scale work Rapture (2008) staged the curved roofs of legendary architect Frank Gehry at Bard College in upstate New York. Melt (2010) was performed by dancers covered in beeswax and lanolin seated on chairs attached to a wall and toured to South America, Europe and Canada. The White Box Project (2011) and Choreography for Audience (2012) used the audience asperformers to create large-scale formations. Spectacle for Infinite Landscape (2017) was presented as part of Canada's 150th Anniversary commissions in teh Capital region, Her work Derives (2019) was staged under the Bentway in Toronto. Beyond using the public space as a stage, her work was also presented at the Whitney Museum at Altria (2005), the Neuberger Museum of Art, the Festival TransAmeriques (FTA) in Montreal (2008), SESC Pinheiros, in Sao Paolo, Brazil (2009), Mellemrum Festival, Copenhagen (2009), PS 122 (2004) among others.
